Dominica
Dominica is the most northerly and largest of the Windward Islands, situated between Guadeloupe and Martinique. Since 1978 it has been an independent republic within the British Commonwealth.
The principal economic activity in Dominica is agriculture, accounting for over a third of GDP and employing 40-50% of the labour force. Bananas, citrus and coconuts are the main crops. Tourism is slowly expanding and the island expects to profit substantially from the growing global interest in eco-tourism.
There is a small but growing manufacturing sector which produces fruit juices, bottled spring water, rum, furniture, garments, footwear, electronic assembly, candles and paint.
There are several tax incentives, including tax holidays, repatriation of profits and withholding tax exemptions.
Dominica has no railway. There are two ports, Roseau which has a deep water harbour, and Portsmouth which has a cruise ship berth. There is an airport at Melville Hall 58 km from Roseau, and a smaller airstrip at Canefield, 8 km from Roseau.
It is acclaimed as the Nature Island of the Caribbean.
