Martinique
Martinique is one of the Windward Islands in the eastern Caribbean and one of the largest of the Lesser Antilles, lying about 595 km south-east of Puerto Rico. It is a French overseas department.
French government expenditure accounts for 70% of Martinique's GDP, providing jobs and services to counteract high unemployment. The agricultural sector employs approximately 8% of the labour force and accounts for some 12% of GDP. Bananas, sugar and pineapples are the main exports, but tourism is also important and the industrial sector encompasses agro-processing, cement and oil refining.
Martinique has five industrial zones and offers a number of tax incentives.
Martinique has no railway. Its main port is Fort-de-France and there are five minor ports. There is an international airport at Lamentin,8 km from Fort-de-France.
