TOURISM GROWTH FUELS CONSTRUCTION BOOM IN ISLANDS

Tourist growth in several of the Caribbean islands is boosting the cargo carryings of Geest Line, the leading shipping line operating between Europe and the region.

A myriad of tourist accommodation projects is being developed in the islands, requiring the shipment of all types of construction, plant, materials and fittings.

In several cases, the cargo is coming from Europe and Geest Line, with its weekly service of breakbulk and container shipments, is ideally placed to deliver. There is a lso a considerable amount of residential development taking place on several islands, further helping to fuel the construction upsurge.

Projects include several new hotels, extensions to existing facilities and new timeshare type developments in St.Lucia, redevelopment of hotels in Grenada and residential projects on the former sugar plantation s of St.Kitts. Indeed, there are over ten separate projects in St.Lucia alone.

A healthy tourism market has prompted many of the developments along with the need to cater for anticipated increases in accommodation demand for the 2007 cricket World Cup.

In addition, industrial development is taking place, most notably the construction of a new terminal in the port of Bridgetown, Barbados. Geest Line's flexible service is seen as ideal for carrying construction equipment and materials with its spacious ships equipped for handling all manner of cargo from pallets to large project items.

"Several of the islands are enjoying a healthy growth in their economies fuelled by tourism and we are seeing this through the volumes and nature of cargoes that we are carrying from Europe to the region," explained Geest Line Freight Director Stephen Robinson.
