On Tuesday 12th January Haiti experienced the devastating earthquake that has now become infamous as one of the worst humanitarian disasters in the countries history. The relief effort has now gathered pace with Governments and individuals rallying to support the people in Haiti with much needed humanitarian aid. Emergency relief organizations are now in full swing delivering much needed food, water and tents. Although Geest Line does not call Haiti directly we do call Manzanillo in the Dominican Rebuplic which lies to the north of the Island but is very close to the Haiti border. Through word of mouth the Haiti Hospital Appeal (charity number 11175528) discovered our services and contacted us with a view to shipping much need medicines and medical equipment of all sorts to Haiti. The charity formed in 2006 to provide much needed health care and last year opened a fully functional health centre based near Cap-Haitian the second largest city in Haiti. With many Haitians now heading north to escape the devestation the centre was in need of medicines and equipment donated by many. Geest agreed to carry the first three forty foot containers to Manzanillo containing these important supplies and are glad to play our part and to support where we can. The ultimate target of the charity is to finance and build a fully functional hospital and we hope that all will get involved supporting this vital charity.
