St. Kitts
St. Kitts and its twin island of Nevis have a population of approximately 46,000, with 35,000 living on St. Kitts.
The Federation of St Kitts and Nevis is part of the Leeward Islands group about 320 km south-east of Puerto Rico and to the north of the Windward group. It has been independent since 1983.
The economy of St Kitts and Nevis is largely dependent on sugar, which represents approximately 55% of its export revenue. Diversification into food crops is being encouraged. The main cash crop is cotton, and there is some subsistence farming and inshore fishing. The islands have the largest electronics assembly industry in the Eastern Caribbean. It has also developed a successful apparel assembly industry. Tourism continues to increase.
Corporations are taxed on income at 40%, but many businesses qualify for development and tax concessions. There is no capital gains tax.
The only railways on St Kitts are used solely for sugar cane.
There is a deep water port at Basseterre (St Kitts), and a further port at Charlestown (Nevis). The Golden Rock airport is located about 3 km from Basseterre, St Kitts, and the Newcastle airport is about 9 km from Charlestown, Nevis.
